Recent university study and the importance of choosing the right ecoglitter. Beware of fake biodegradable glitter.

Recent university study and the importance of choosing the right ecoglitter. Beware of fake biodegradable glitter.

A study recently published by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) questions ecoglitter impact in the environment. This study is another proof of the importance to make sure any ecoglitter used has third party credentials verifying its biodegradability in nature. Read further to know how to differentiate real and genuine ecoglitter from fake biodegradable ecoglitter.

There are many so-called Biodegradable glitters in the market. The only way to know if a biodegradable glitter is actually good is making sure it decomposes in nature.

Compostable glitter is not good enough as it requires each particle to be disposed in a composting bin. This process is not realistic as any glitter user will wash their skin and glitter will end up in waster water which once purified, will flow into rivers.

A true biodegradable glitter will decompose naturally without the need of composting processes. This is the reason why it is extremely important to make sure that any biodegradable glitter has been certified by a third party to verify that it actually biodegrades in nature. Otherwise, studies like the one performed with ARU will prove that fake ecoglitters will behave like plastic glitter.

As of 2020, only Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure (both manufactured by Ronald Britton) are the only Ecoglitter in the world tested by TÜV (leading certification entity).

How do I know if my ecoglitter is good?

It is important to mention that ARU study reinforces the importance of the claims we have been advocating in the past years:

  • Shows the key importance to distinguish 'fake biodegradable glitter' vs. true bioglitter.

  • Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure are the only products in the world that have been tested by a third party (TÜV) to know exactly how long they take to biodegrade in nature in a period of 30 days. Bioglitter Sparkle biodegrades 87% in nature in 30 days; Bioglitter Pure biodegrades 92% in nature in 30 days.

  • Bio-Glitter Sparkle and Bio-glitter Pure also have ecological achievements such as 'OK Biodegradable WATER' certification by TÜV or Verified micro-plastic free (ECHA Microplastic Proposal, Jan 2019.)

  • Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure are the only real alternative to plastic glitter.

  • A brief summary about TÜV and its reputation:

    • 2,000 employees in 20 countries.

    • Trusted by multinationals like Siemens.

What are the latest innovations in ecoglitter?

The test recently published by ARU university also has some inconsistencies that are important to highlight.

  • Tests were done 2 years ago (2018) and do not reflect innovation on biodegradable glitters (moreover study does not consider the differences of existing products in the market)

  • No Bioglitter Sparkle or Bioglitter Pure were used in the study.

  • States that invasive species increased in number. That would be the case for any natural ingredient added to an invasive species environment (food).

  • The testing environment may not be representative of real world conditions. This is precisely the reason why a third party, (TUV) tested Bioglitter Sparkle and Bioglitter Pure. TÜV uses extensive protocols providing realistic testing environments that mimic conditions in the real world.

Major publications like BBC and Guardian already confirmed they will be updating their publications to reflect the latest innovations in the ecoglitter industry. Additional publications are expected to follow.

The message is: Plastic glitter is already a problem, using 'fake ecoglitters' (the ones without third party verification) will also harm the environment.
