Olive Oil and its Many Forms

For those who often wonder, is olive oil comedogenic? You should know that in, its pure form, it may be a little. But, when reduced to 25% concentrations and mixed with other oils like mineral oil – which is usually what happens – it will definitely not clog your pores. Now, there are some common misconceptions about mineral oil being unsafe, but that is not true. Here are some ideas about it:

  • Mineral oil is considered one of the safest ingredients in cosmetics, it contains many hypoallergenic ingredients that keep the skin moisturized at all times.
  • It has some sort of bad reputation because it comes from petroleum and is also used in many domestic duties, but its benefits are completely proven on the skin.
  • The mineral oil that is used in skin care is quite far from its basic form, that is why it is very common in the industry. It is known to be very safe and efficient.

The combination of olive oil and mineral oil is one of the most common forms in the industry, that is why it is regularly considered as one of best emollients in cosmetics by many formulators. But there are more forms.

What Olive Oil Works Better?

There are several levels of olive oil concentrations in the market, including the olive squalane from our Dermanet line. The important thing to remember is what makes a product comedogenic or not is the concentration amount of specific ingredients and its mixture with others, it should not clog pores and needs to have excellent compatibility with the skin.

Like the olive squalane from our line, for instance. Dermanet Squalane is an olive oil derivative that helps to smooth and soften the skin, refilling its lipids and providing excellent compatibility with the skin since the natural sebum contains at least 12% of squalene, which matches in a great way with external olive squalane. The main olive oil types are:

  • Refined olive oil
  • Virgin olive oil
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Organic extra virgin olive oil

Organic extra virgin olive oil is highly recommended to get all the benefits of olive oil.

Other Oils that Are Not Comedogenic

Besides olive oil, there are other natural oils that will not clog pores of consumers, including the following ones that rate 0% as being comedogenic:

  • Sunflower oil: rich in vitamins that improve skin health
  • Safflower oil: very hydrating and used as a carrier oil in the skin
  • Argan oil: extremely moisturizing thanks to its rich content of Vitamin E
  • Hemp seed oil: excellent to absorb vitamin D

If the consumer has acne prone skin, it is advisable to use the least comedogenic oil.
